Ningún hombre es una isla, John Donne

John Donne es un poeta inglés que vivió entre los siglos XVI y XVII. Es conocido por su versos metafísicos y meditaciones sobre el hombre y su sociedad. El siguiente poema es parte de sus Meditaciones, la XVII. En él podemos ver la idea de la interconexión humana llevada a su nivel último: el personal.

Ningún hombre es una isla,
entera en sí,
Cada hombre es pieza de continente,
parte del total.
Si el villano es arrastrado por el mar,
Europa se reduce.
Cual si fuera  promontorio,
cual si fuera coro de amigos,
o  fuera propia:
Toda muerte me disminuye,
pues estoy con la humanidad
Así no pidas saber por quién dobla la campana;
dobla por ti.
